Germany launched its FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup campaign with an emphatic 5-0 trouncing of Costa Rica at QE II Stadium today. Germany were in total control of the match from start to finish as Costa Rica toiled against their European opponents. Lynn Mester got Ralf Peters’ team off to the perfect start on 17 minutes with a well-taken goal that gave Costa Rica goalkeeper Priscila Tapia no chance.

Germany went further ahead thanks to a Dzsenifer Marozsan double on 34 and 43 minutes to render the result all but academic as Costa Rica trailed 3-0 at the break. Turid Knaak and Tabea Kemme heaped more misery on Juan Quesad’s charges with goals on 51 and 66 minutes to complete the rout.

Costa Rica’s day darkened further when defender Gabriela Guillen was sent off by referee Etsuko Fukano of Japan for a second yellow card with just nine minutes remaining.

Germany will take some stopping based on their amazing 29 shots on Costa Rica’s goal with the CONCACAF qualifiers defending stoically in the face of clinical finishing by their opponents.

The win leaves Germany in a comfortable position at the top of the table with DPR Korea to meet Ghana in the final match of Match Day 2. Costa Rica must win its next match to have any chance of qualifying for the quarter finals.
