OFC women’s development officer Nicola Demaine travelled over recently to present a three day OFC Women’s Coaching Course at the FFAS headquarters in Pago Pago covering session planning, delivery and evaluation.
Twelve club coaches took part and Demaine says the content was aimed at a slightly higher level as similar courses have been run in the past.
“I thought with the content we have covered in the past and again here, the participants were more than capable of creating their own session content so they set about designing games and putting them into practice with the Centre of Excellence girls,” Demaine says.
She says the coaches also had the opportunity to discuss the state of the women’s game in American Samoa.
“In groups we discussed the good, the bad, what can be improved for the good of the game, and what some of the perceived barriers to women’s football development are.
“Some good ideas came from the workshop and were discussed in the presence of FFAS staff who will look at implementing them.”
Demaine says all the participants showed promise and she’s confident they are on the right path to continue developing the women’s game in American Samoa.
She says the course was also an excellent opportunity for her to see the girls attending the Centre of Excellence in action, noting there has been a marked improvement since she last saw them training.
