Darren Bazeley’s team – which finished third in Group A – will tangle with the Group C winners at Waikato Stadium on Thursday in the round of 16 and the New Zealand coach says his group will be ready.
“Portugal is a very strong team,” Bazeley said.
“They qualified for the tournament out of a strong competition in Europe and so far look like one of the best teams here.
“It’s going to be a massive challenge for us and it’s one we are excited to prepare for against some of the best players in the world.”
Bazeley called on football fans around the country to continue their tremendous support of his side after big turnouts in the first three games in Auckland and Wellington.
“Our boys have had great support in each game and we will need that 12th player in white again on Thursday as we look forward to the opportunity to make the country proud in front of another big crowd in Hamilton.”
