Despite starting the 2012 TVL Premier League season strongly, Iwai’s Spirit side could manage only fourth place on the table – just missing out on a spot in the 2013 National Super League.
Iwai also spent time in 2012 as head coach of the Vanuatu U-23 side which competed in the OFC Men’s Olympic Qualifiers in Taupo during March.
The former Tafea striker replaces Philemon John, who has spent more than three years in the assistant coach role at Amicale and is expected to remain a member of the coaching staff during 2013.
Iwai says he is keen to get started in his new role, taking up the post ahead of the 2013 Port Vila Shield, which kicks-off this Saturday.
“I am happy to step in to help Amicale. This is one of my biggest challenges and I promise to do my best with the side in the OFC Champions League,” Iwai says.
“This is a very important tournament and we hope to do our best and achieve our goals.”
Amicale is expected to make an announcement in regards to the team’s head coach in the coming weeks.
