Currently on contract with Troyes until June 2015, Georges Gope-Fenepej – also nicknamed ‘Waddle’ – has decided to pursue the rest of the season at Third Division side Union Sportive Boulogne-sur-Mer following an agreement between the two clubs.
The player’s agent Jean-Christophe Cahuzac says the move will be beneficial for the youngster to gain more playing time.
‘’Boulogne remains a good choice for Georges to play regularly in the starting line-up and gain some playing time.
‘’The team plays an attractive football in movement with good players,” he says.
Cahuzac says Boulogne coach Stephane Le Mignan is optimistic about the quality of the young New Caledonian and his potential impact.
‘’Coach Stephane Le Mignan has already watched some footage of Georges’s games and knows exactly what his qualities are and the points he needs to improve.’’
The mentality and the structure of Boulogne also seems to align with the player’s needs.
‘’Boulogne is a family oriented club where Georges will not have any difficulties to be integrated into the set-up,’’ Cahuzac said.
Gope-Fenepej career took off during the Pacific Games in 2011 held in New Caledonia.
Alongside Oceania Player of the Year Bertrand Kai, he played a key role as Les Cagous clinched the Gold medal.
Gope-Fenepej scored six goals during the tournament and finished second top scorer behind Kai.
The turning point of his career remains the momentous 2-0 victory over New Zealand in the semi-final of the 2012 OFC Nations Cup.
‘Waddle’ scored two goals during the tournament and one of them was a stunning goal against the All Whites which saw New Caledonia through to the final against Tahiti.
Unfortunately his, and Les Cagous’, hopes of reaching the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil ended when a Steevy Chong Hue goal guided Tahiti to a 1-0 win.
Shortly after that match Gope-Fenepej left New Caledonia Super Ligue club Magenta to play in France with Ligue 1-bound Troyes.
During his time at the club he made his debut in the French top flight but Troyes struggled and were eventually relegated.
Gope-Fenepej scored his first professional career goal for Troyes against Ajaccio in Ligue 2 earlier this season.
US Boulogne-sur-Mer currently sit eighth in the Third Division with four wins, two draws and three losses.
