The destructive 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit eastern Turkey on 23 October 2011 killing around 600 people and leaving thousands more injured or homeless.
President Yildirim Demirören’e accepted the contribution on behalf of the Türkiye Futbol Federasyonu and expressed his gratitude towards Oceania Football Confederation.
The presentation was made during the recent XXXVI Ordinary UEFA Congress held in Istanbul, Turkey.
President Chung says he had been saddened by the stories coming out of Van and surrounding areas.
“Living in the Pacific we are all too aware of the devastation that earthquakes can cause,” says Chung.
“There is a lot of work to be done in Turkey’s recovery efforts and we hope that this donation, albeit small, will benefit those who have been affected by this disaster.”
The assistance is provided as part of ‘Football for Life’ – a concept that embodies OFC’s strong commitment to social development and support for the wider football family in times of need.
In 2011, OFC gave $25,000 NZD to both the New Zealand Football Christchurch Earthquake Appeal and the Japanese Football Association to assist with relief efforts following the devastating earthquakes.
Last month, $50,000 PGK was provided to assist in the relief effort after the tragic sinking of a passenger ferry in Papua New Guinea waters.
