With heavy rain falling at Stadio del Mare, neither side were able to find a breakthrough in the first period, despite Russia’s dominance.
The second period opened with more success for the eastern Europeans, however, as Egor Shaykov capitalised on a defensive mistake from the Tahitians to fire home a powerful volley.
Tahiti were searching for an equaliser on the counter, but it was Russia who hit their stride in the third period to put the game out of reach.
Egor Eremeev scored his third goal of the tournament, before Yury Krasheninnikov lobbed an awkward ball over Franck Revel in the Tahitian goal.
Ilya Leonov then stroked in a fine chance from the left flank, and it was Alexey Makarov who rounded out the scoring as he tapped home with ease after a mistake from Revel.
Tahiti still, however, have a chance to qualify for the knockout phase when they face Nigeria on Tuesday 6 September, while Russia will look to stamp their place in the next round against Venezuela.
