Wama was identified by Hekari United FC when the eight times current PNG National Soccer League Champion went for a goodwill tour in Kimbe, West New Britain Province some years back.
Through team captain David Muta’s connection, Wira was scouted by the Hekari FC management. From then on, it was history in the making for this young lad who is from a mix parentage of Southern Highlands (Erave) and West New Britain (Kimbe).
Wama never looked back on the journey he took and joining a franchise (Hekari United FC) that feared God and put Christ first in everything. That was what mattered most for Wama was a devoted Christian.
This has also seen them (Hekari United FC) becoming undefeated in the Telikom National Soccer League competition for eight consecutive seasons. Hekari United FC also become the first club outside of New Zealand and Australia to have represented Oceania region in the World Club challenge.
Hekari team manageress Vonnie Kapi-Natto would have made history also as the first female team manager in the Pacific and Oceania region for that matter to have exported most of her players overseas playing for prominent club.
This time it is young Wama who is now playing for Maranatha Baptist Bible College Crusaders Soccer Team in the National Christian College Athletic Association Inc (NCCAA) in the United States of America.
Apart from Wama many other players including David Muta, Koriak Upaiga, Kema Jack to name a few have also played for overseas clubs. Wama is the first to play in the US. This is history in the making for young Wama and in fact this will the first ever Papua New Guinean to have ever played college soccer in US in a sanctioned NCAA competition which is a plus for PNG where other sports like tennis, and athletics frequent that part of the world.
But Wama’s team manager Vonnie has always emphasized to her players that having faith in God will only direct their path and that’s what happen to young Wama who now enjoying every minute of his stay in the US as well as playing the game he loves-soccer.
Wama is currently studying also majoring in Applied Science and also enhancing his soccer talents and skills playing for his new team, Maranatha Crusaders. Currently Wama is making waves in his college soccer in US.
Meanwhile MBBC is very grateful for the talent and skills Wama has displayed with his college team and they are very grateful for this young Papua New Guinean. Wama’s current coach in US is one of the former assistant coaches for the US Women’s national team and was the former US U19 coach as well.
“I am the happiest football manager that my hard work and strong discipline has helped to get someone to achieve his dreams and I am grateful to Maranatha Baptist Bible College for this relationship it has for Wira Wama and us that all along, we knew that our passion and commitment will bring joy to help develop our young footballers who are discipline in their passion and eager to achieve their dreams,” said Vonnie.
Wama’s goal now is to do well in his studies as well as his soccer career and come back home to play for his country in 2015 South Pacific Games.
