The program kicked off with the highlights of the different sporting codes and MRDC Hekari United was not a mistake, included. The recent Under 17 team who represented Papua New Guinea was one of the few nominees, including Mrs. Vonnie Natto in the “Sports Administrator of the year” category and the Under 17 in the “Junior Team of the Year” missed out on the awards, however Hekari United, with no doubt was awarded for the “Team of the year” category.
The team was recognized for their participation in the Oceania League. They were qualified for the FIFA Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi for scoring most goals during the O-League season after defeating Waitakere FC of New Zealand.
Being the first ever pacific island nation to take part in the Championships in Abu Dhabi, Hekari were fortunate after winning their first leg O-League in Port Moresby and qualified for the World known football match in the Emirates but missed out when they took on Al Whada during the championships.
However, with success the team had, they were awarded the “Team of the year” award in the presence of other sport fraternity and distinguished guests, not forgetting the media personnel. On receiving the award, Mr. Lasi also dedicated the award to late Mr. Natto for being the man behind the team until his in 2000.
Even though Mr & Mrs Natto were not present to witness the presentation of the award to the team, the Team Manager Mr. Gau Lasi and the coach, Sailosi showed up on their behalf.
After the presentation a short interview was held with the Hekari’s midfielder, Eric Komeng, he said the opportunity to the Emirates is a stepping stone for the code in the country which has boosted especially the youths to engage them in football in the country.
“It has been the great achievement for the club and we would like to dedicate this time to thank our heavenly father for giving us this opportunity,” Eric says.
