In their lead up for the tournament the boys have been selected in the Besta PNG United FC squad to play against the other franchise teams to give the boys the opportunity to see who will make the final squad.
Rufer said they are currently 30 players in the camp and they are still in the process of identifying the final 20.
“The preparation of the team is going very well. We have the final camp coming up this month before we choose the side and then the team will leave for New Zealand for some lead up matches before flying onto Fiji,” Rufer says.
“It’s an exciting time for us as we build up towards the tournament in Fiji where the winner will represent Oceania in the FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand in 2015,” says Rufer.
“We’ve got a very good chance because the talent in PNG is outstanding which I’ve been very surprised with. We will have tough competition against the host Fiji, Vanuatu, New Caledonia and Solomon Island but we will take every game seriously.” Rufer added.
“The OFC U-19 Championship will start on the 23rd May and ends on the 31st May so we have five more weeks to prepare and I have confidence in the team after being with them for the past camps. “
