All four matches ended level on day five of the FIFA World Cup 2026™, with World Cup debutants Cape Verde producing a historic result against Spain and New Zealand earning a memorable point on their return to football’s biggest stage.
Group H
Spain 0 Cape Verde 0
The biggest story came in Group H, where Cape Verde held 2010 champions Spain to a remarkable 0-0 draw in one of the shocks of the tournament so far.
Spain dominated possession as expected but struggled to break down a disciplined Cape Verde side that defended superbly from start to finish. The star of the show was 40-year-old goalkeeper Vozinha, who produced seven saves and a string of crucial interventions to preserve a famous clean sheet.
Fabian Ruiz came closest for Spain after the break, but Cape Verde continued to frustrate their illustrious opponents and celebrated wildly at full-time after securing a point that will live long in the nation’s football history.
The second Group H encounter also finished level as Saudi Arabia and Uruguay shared the spoils in Miami.
Saudi Arabia took the lead through Abdulelah Al Amri after Uruguay failed to deal with a dangerous set-piece. The Green Falcons defended resolutely throughout much of the second half before Uruguay finally found a breakthrough 10 minutes from time when Maxi Araújo converted after Mohammed Al Owais could only parry a Federico Viñas header.
The draw means all four teams in Group H sit on one point after the opening round of matches.
Belgium 1 Egypt 1
Egypt impressed throughout the first half and looked set for a famous victory after taking the lead through Mohamed Salah inspired attacking play. Emam Ashour scored a scintilating goal past a despairing Thibaut Courtois to fire the Egyptians into a shock 19th minute lead. Belgium struggled to find rhythm against the organised Egyptians, who pressed aggressively and limited the influence of key attackers Jérémy Doku and Leandro Trossard.
The Europeans improved after the break and eventually found an equaliser through an own goal to rescue a point, leaving both nations well positioned heading into their second group fixtures.
The final match of the day produced one of the most memorable moments of New Zealand’s modern football history.
The All Whites marked their first FIFA World Cup appearance in 16 years with a deserved 2-2 draw against IR Iran in Los Angeles, with Elijah Just scoring both goals in a standout performance.
New Zealand stunned the world’s 20th-ranked side when Just opened the scoring after just seven minutes following excellent work from captain Chris Wood. Iran responded through Ramin Rezaeian before halftime, but the All Whites regained the lead in the 54th minute as Wood again combined brilliantly with Just, who finished clinically for his second goal.
Iran levelled once more through Mohammad Mohebi and pushed hard for a winner, but New Zealand held firm to secure a valuable point.
The result extends New Zealand’s unbeaten FIFA World Cup finals record since 1982 and saw Just become the first All Whites player to score twice in a World Cup match.
