The tournament was created in 2008 and brings together U-12 players from across New Caledonia for a series of 9-a-side games. But football is not the only focus of the tournament, which also serves to promote personal values such as friendship and respect.
A total of 690 young players have participated in the event since its inception and hosts OMS Païta are the reigning champions.
Fédération Calédonienne de Football (FCF) and Province South Council join forces with OMS Païta in putting on the tournament and club president Raymond Edo is pleased with how it has progressed.
“The tournament grows every year and now we are up to 24 teams,” he says.
“Our ambition is to gather as many young players as we can from all around the country and provide the opportunity to enjoy football in a friendly way.”
The event is backed by national team captain Pierre Wajoka and the star midfielder is delighted to be involved.
“It is with a lot of pleasure that I have responded to the invitation of OMS Païta to partner with them in this fourth edition of the Licorne Cup,” the 2007 and 2011 Pacific Games winner says.
“I accepted the invitation without any hesitation and it is great to see the interest of the young players growing for these kind of events. I will participate with a lot of enthusiasm as I think this is a great initiative for the youth.”
