Tupapa’s big-game experience proved the difference as they dominated the match for large periods.
Cook Islands international striker Campbell Best gave an indication of what awaits the Cook Islands’ opponents at the 2018 FIFA World Cup Russia Qualifiers – OFC Stage 1 in Tonga next week with a first half hat-trick.
A goal to Takuvaine’s Alfred Marsters was his side’s only opportunity to penetrate Tupapa’s otherwise solid defence in the first half.
The Red Devils came out determined in the second half and were rewarded with two goals to Peni Kikiona.
However Tupapa returned fire courtesy of Sato Mariri and Anthony Samuela to reclaim their lead.
Tupapa Mararenga captain Mii Joseph couldn’t contain his excitement at getting the season off to a winning start.
“I am happy with the end result of the match and winning a trophy is definitely a good start to our season,” he said.
“I feel my boys played really well, we tried to keep things as simple as possible and work as a unit creating plays, and ending up with a goal.
“We thank Takuvaine for a good game, as expected and showin in previous years Takuvaine have always been a hard team to beat and surely continue that this year. We wish them good luck this season.”
While unable to get the result they had hoped for, Takuvaine players Eddie Nicholas was proud nonetheless of the effort that went in.
“Congratulations to Tupapa Mararenga for their win. We’re unhappy with the results tonight, but I’m still proud of the team’s efforts.”
Post-match Cook Islands Football Association President Lee Harmon was able to present a $750 cheque from gate takings and donations to charity of choice Roteract, along with some footballs.
Roteract Cook Islands vice-president Marino Wichman says the organisation is incredibly grateful for the donation from CIFA, which will be put to use in upcoming projects.
“We would like to thank the CIFA President and the assocation for the donation, the footballs and the initiative for this great idea,” he says.
“The funds and footballs will be utilised for our various Community Projects and Pa Enua initiatives.”
