The organisation is running an OFC junior coaching course at Loto Tonga Soka Centre in ‘Atele this week. The three-day workshop is being attended by 15 sports masters from 13 secondary schools in Tongatapu and will wrap up on Friday.
The aim of the course is to improve the development of the game at secondary school level and has been timed to coincide with Tonga’s 2010 secondary schools competition, which kicks off on Friday, July 30.
The course is being run by TFA’s OFC-accredited instructors Kilifi Uele and Lui Muavesi.
Uele told those taking part that the association is committed to the development of football in the kingdom but that progress at school level, and the success of the upcoming tournament, is very much dependant on their own commitment.
“It’s encouraging to have an increase in the number of participating schools,” he said. “The next three days will be intense and you will be repsonsible for ensuring your schools embrace the spirit of sportsmanship and fair play.”
Eleven schools took part in last year’s tournament and that figure has increased by two (out of the 15 secondary schools in the area) for the 2010 event.
