CEO for MESC Galumalemana N. Petaia and FFS CEO Mr. Frederick Young took part in the signing ceremony on Friday 14 May.
Just Play is a grassroots programme developed by OFC and designed for children between the ages 6-12. It is based around structured activity as well as the distribution of equipment packs containing balls, cones, bibs, activity manuals and other resources that enable children to play football at anytime and in any situation.
The Government of Australia have provided significant support for the initative which has already launched in Pacific Island nations Tonga and Vanuatu.
School teachers and volunteers will be receiving training by OFC in cooperation with FFS to provide and teach students on how to develop game skills and lead healthier lives.
MESC CEO Galumalemana explained that the Just Play programme “is a learning opportunity for young children which provides them with quality education through fun sporting activities. Children will be able to learn in a less formal and confining classroom setting by learning outside on the field where there are more open spaces. It also provides teachers with new perspectives when it comes to teaching children.”
MESC Assistant CEO for Sports Luatua Seumanutafa S. Epati echoed these sentiments.
“The programme compliments the Physical Education curriculum in the primary schools and the Ministry were really looking forward to signing the agreement.”
Just Play will be launched in mid-June 2010. Following the official launching, FFS will start the process of training teachers from selected government and private schools. These teachers will then be able to implement the program at their respective schools.
FFS CEO Mr. Fredrick Young says it will take a collaborative effort to ensure the success of the programme.
”The implementation of the Just Play programme will be a big step in the development and growth of football in Samoa. The Federation is looking forward to working closely with schools in collaboration with MESC to ensure the sustainability of the sport in Samoa.”
