The six-day workshop was held in September at the PNGFA Academy in Lae with 22 participants from different areas coming together to learn from OFC head of education Didier Chambaron, with assistance from OFC coach/mentor Mike Keeney.
Keeney says included in the participants were three female coaches, two candidates and one refresher, with a wide spread of regions represented including Port Moresby, Garoka and Kimbe.
“We had a great representation of coach levels within Papua New Guinea,” Keeney says.
“A few participants were former national team players. We also had Trevor Ire attending, a former Hekari United player who went to the 2010 Club World Cup in UAE.”
Chambaron says the course involves a minimum of 54 hours of theoretical and practical content with a final exam which focuses on the coach’s practical coaching abilities, knowledge and understanding of the theoretical contents of the game.
“These coaches all have the potential to become very good in their roles as long as they have a passion for the game. If they are passionate, they can achieve good results,” Chambaron says.
“If they want to improve as coaches they need to practice five times a week. This course is a starting point, with an open mind we share ideas and an opportunity to discuss what the coaching process is.
“But they must create their own best way for the players, and practice coaching in order to learn from their mistakes.”
The OFC C Licence Coaching Course was held at Lae Academy from 8-13 September, 2013.
