Vanuatu impressed on Match Day 2 when their second half efforts kept the Papua New Guinea strike force at bay restricting them to just four first half goals. While it’s been a tough classroom, these quick learning young players are absorbing the lessons being taught by their more experienced opponents and applying it to their game and tactics. With a solid backline and rising confidence this side could well notch their opening win.
But they face a Tongan side full of dogged determination as evidenced by their stunning performance against the highly ranked Junior Football Ferns. Tonga changed tactics following their opening 4-0 loss to Papua New Guinea, positioning themselves into a tight defensive unit. While there were moments of weakness, considering the last encounter between these two countries resulted in an 11-0 defeat, for Tonga a 3-1 loss is considered something of a victory. They’ll now look to build on these foundations in order to go home with a win.
With a ticket to FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in Canada riding on it, the final match of the competition is the one everyone has been building up to. The two sides have recorded decent wins on the road to this showdown, and while they have impressed along the way, have struggled to convert the myriad of chances they’ve been presented with.
Papua New Guinea looked comfortable in their wins against both Tonga and Vanuatu. While they didn’t knock as many goals past Vanautu as New Zealand did, they remain the only side to retain a clean sheet so far in the competition.
New Zealand eased past Vanuatu with the only thing preventing a much higher goal difference being their difficulty finishing. While Tonga’s deep-block defence proved hard to break down, the Junior Football Ferns once again let themselves down in front of goal missing a number of clear opportunities to extend their lead.
Both sides will need to be more effective if they want to come out on top and snag that remaining berth to join the world’s top U-20 women’s sides in Canada come August.
