The announcement was made today at the Home of FIFA in Zurich, following the FIFA Executive Committee meeting, by President Joseph S. Blatter.
Papua New Guinea Football Association President David Chung also OFC President and FIFA Vice-President, was elated following the announcement.
“PNGFA has worked closely with the Papua New Guinea Government to prepare this bid and it is very pleasing that Papua New Guinea will welcome the football world in 2016,” Chung says.
The 16-team tournament will involve the host cities of Port Moresby, Lae and Kokopo and it is proposed the tournament be held in November.
“I am confident that in partnership with the Government and the friendly people of Papua New Guinea we will put on a great event that will showcase the future stars of women’s football with the backdrop being our diverse culture, language, flora and fauna.”
“We have successfully hosted the OFC Women’s Nations Cup in Kokopo in 2014 and will soon play host to the OFC Women’s Olympic Qualifying tournament during the XV Pacific Games this July in preparedness to host this FIFA event.
“Following on from the hosting of the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup in Tahiti in 2013 and the FIFA U-20 World Cup in New Zealand in May, this decision will open the way for other Pacific countries to host FIFA events.”
