After the Ferns’ FIFA Women’s World Cup campaign, Hassett travelled to Europe where transfer windows were closing for a number of different leagues.
The 81-cap international opted for the Norwegian club – in a stint that will last until the end of the Toppserien league season in November.
“I was then in contact with Amazon Grimstad and I thought it would be an interesting experience to come and play in Norway for the rest of the season with Kiwi coach Olli Harder,” Hassett said.
The 25-year old says the move is a great fit for her both on and off the field of play.
“This club really appealed to me as it is situated in a tiny beautiful town in the south of Norway right next to the ocean.
“I felt this was the perfect place to come and really focus on my football for the remainder of the season here with as little distraction as possible.
“The league here is very quick and physical and quite direct which is something I have not experienced before. I definitely bring different qualities to the style of play here and I am excited to learn from this style of play and add it to my game.”
Hassett says part of the appeal of the switch was to try to help the club move away from the threat of relegation from the top level of Norwegian women’s football.
“The team is near the bottom of the table in this league and so I have come here with a purpose which is to help the team stay in the league next year. This is a challenge that I am very much looking forward to achieving while I am here.”
“I love it so far. We won our first game against a top three team in the league so I was off to a good start. I am loving the team and the coaches and everyone has been very welcoming.”
Football Ferns coach Tony Readings says the move is good one for both Hassett as an individual and the national team.
“It’s important our players are getting regular competition at a high level as we continue to build-up towards qualification for the Olympics next year and beyond,” Readings said.
“Betsy has joined one of the top leagues in Europe and the experience she gets playing the Norwegian style of football will benefit her individually and the Football Ferns as we come up against nations who play in similar ways.”
