Ben Hungai’s journey from national futsal player to coach educator in Vanuatu is driven by one thing, passion. For the 40-year-old, passion and commitment are the foundation for growth, not just personally, but for futsal development across the entire Oceania region.

“These qualities have always pushed me to keep going,” Hungai said. “If we stay committed and make ourselves available for every program, every team, we can inspire one another. Coaches can model each other, and together we’ll keep building the sport.” He added.

Hungai’s coaching philosophy is deeply rooted in learning. Years of playing for the national team and working with peers across the Pacific have shaped his approach. He credits mentoring, shared knowledge, and exposure to different futsal styles as key to his growth.

“Learning is the key to success,” he explained. “It helped me become who I am today.”

Now he’s focused on giving back. As a coach educator he mentors future coaches and promotes resources like OFC Learn and the FIFA Training Centre. He sees these as powerful tools that can help Pacific Islanders improve their skills and grow the game in their communities.

“There’s always room for progress; we just have to be willing to learn.”

One story that stands out for Hungai is that of Tito Quai, his former mentee and now assistant coach of the national futsal team.

“Tito was inspired by my work, and today he’s the first futsal coach in Vanuatu to earn a C License,” a proud Hungai reflected. “Helping him achieve his dream is one of my biggest accomplishments.”

Seeing Tito grow has only strengthened Ben’s belief in mentorship. “This is just the beginning. If one coach can reach this level, many others can follow. The future is bright.”

For Hungai, every success story is a reminder of what’s possible when passion, education, and support come together. His vision for futsal in Oceania is hopeful and focused on empowering others.

“I feel proud and thankful; this is the start of a journey that many more can walk.”

Ben Hungai’s work is not just about coaching—it’s about building a stronger future for futsal, one coach at a time.
