Fairytale headlines were made as Auckland City’s Christian Gray nodded home a 52nd minute equalizer after the New Zealanders went behind through an own goal, earning an historic 1-1 draw. The Oceania champions held firm against 40 shots at goal from the Argentinians, eliminating Boca and returning home with a proud match to remember.

Meanwhile, Benfica stunned Bayern Munich to claim top spot in Group C. The 1-0 victory was sealed by Andreas Schjelderup after being teed up by veteran Ángel Di Maria. Bayern controlled possession but were wasteful, suffering their first defeat of the tournament. Group winners Benfica will face Chelsea, while Bayern play CR Flamengo in the knockout stages.

Denis Bouanga looked to have won it for LAFC with a late strike, but Wallace Yan equalized two minutes later to send Flamengo through, as the Brazilians finish second in Group D, following a goalless draw with Chelsea in their opener. LAFC also drew with Espérance and exit the tournament unbeaten, but with too few points to advance. Flamengo now face Bayern in a blockbuster knockout match.

Espérance de Tunisie v Chelsea FC

Rounding out a day of drama, Chelsea secured a much-needed win under blistering heat with goals from Tosin Adarabioyo, Liam Delap (his first for the club), and Tyrique George to seal second place in Group D. Despite resting key players like Cole Palmer and Robert Sanchez, Chelsea showcased their depth and now head into the Round of 16 as Group D’s runners-up, and will face Benfica in Charlotte.
