Round 2 of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027™ Oceania Qualifiers saw eight OFC member associations take the next step on the journey to the global finals in Brazil next year.

Four nations – New Zealand, American Samoa, Papua New Guinea, and Fiji – booked their place in Round 3 in April, whilst the Solomon Islands, Samoa, New Caledonia, and Vanuatu, all had their qualifying dreams dashed.

As eyes begin turning towards the next stage, we’ve decided to take a look back at the action and moments that defined Round 2 of the qualifying process.

Group Stage Breakdown

Group A | Honiara, Solomon Islands

As expected, New Zealand were the dominant force in Group A, defeating both Samoa and the Solomon Islands by identical 8-0 scorelines.

Appearing in the second round of the qualification process for the first time, American Samoa were equally impressive too, beating the Solomon Islands and Samoa by the same 1-0 scoreline.

Those results meant both nations secured their spot in Round 3 with a game still to spare, New Zealand defeating American Samoa 3-0 on the final matchday to claim top spot in Group A ahead of the semi-final stage at home.  Meanwhile, Samoa ended their campaign with a 2-1 win over the Solomon Islands.

Group B | Ba, Fiji

Likewise, Fiji and Papua New Guinea guaranteed themselves of progression to Round 3 with a match to spare in Group B.

Playing in front of their home fans, Fiji beat New Caledonia 5-0 and Vanuatu 1-0, whilst Papua New Guinea beat Vanuatu 5-0 and New Caledonia 4-0.

Having had their fixture rescheduled due to wet weather, Papua New Guinea claimed top spot with a 1-0 win over Fiji on the final matchday, courtesy of a late winner from Meagen Gunemba in the 86th minute.

American Samoa continues historic rise

Winners of their first senior international women’s match in November 2025, just three months earlier, American Samoa continued their rise under Amanda Cromwell by advancing to Round 3 of the qualification phase.

They stunned the region again with their 1-0 victory over the Solomon Islands (the continental champions) in their first match, before backing it up with a 1-0 win over neighbours Samoa – their first victories over both nations.

Advancing as runners-up from Group A, the sky seems the limit for American Samoa, who will be targeting more history during Round 3 in April.

Continental champions crash out

Coming into the Oceania Qualifiers as OFC Women’s Nations Cup 2025 holders, the Solomon Islands suffered a shock early exit in Round 2.

They struggled to gel in front of their home fans, losing all three of their Group A fixtures at the National Stadium in Honiara, whilst scoring just one goal and conceding 11 as they crashed out of the qualifiers at the first hurdle.

The Solomons were one of four nations to have their qualifying dreams curtailed, with Samoa and New Caledonia both registering wins but falling short, whilst Vanuatu failed to collect a single point.

Strong start for Kulas new head coach

Stepping up as the new head coach of the Fijian women’s national team, Nicola Demaine navigated her side through Round 2 of the qualification process with two wins from their three Group B fixtures.

Returning to the region after coaching the Bhutan women’s national team, and having previously led both Papua New Guinea and Samoa, Demaine had the Kulas playing direct transitional football in her first assignment as head coach, and insists her aim is to lead Fiji to their first FIFA Women’s World Cup.

New Zealand start strong

The Football Ferns maintained their dominant record in FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifiers to progress to Round 2, whilst also testing their depth with a largely inexperienced squad, and three international debutants.

Pia Vlok, Charlotte Lancaster, and Maddie Iro, all collected their first international caps during Round 2, as New Zealand secured progression with three wins from three, and a +19-goal difference. They have never lost to a Pacific Island nation in FIFA Women’s World Cup qualifying, and haven’t conceded a goal either, since a 6-1 win over Papua New Guinea in 2007.

Papua New Guinea win three from three

Aside from New Zealand, the other team to win all three off their Round 2 fixtures without conceding a goal were Papua New Guinea.

The Bilums were dominant in all three of their matches in Fiji, and led by captain Ramona Padio, and a dangerous front three of Keren Kalapai, Nenny Elipas, and Marie Kaipu, will head into Round 3 with confidence.

Looking Ahead

The four qualified nations now head to New Zealand in April for Round 3 of the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027™ Oceania Qualifiers, where the winner will qualify for the finals in Brazil next year, whilst the runner-up will advance to the intercontinental play-off stage.

Papua New Guinea will play American Samoa in the first semi-final, and New Zealand will host Fiji in the second – both in Hamilton on April 12 – with the two winners to meet in the final in Auckland on April 15.
