A dramatic 90th-minute strike from Leila Hausia-Haugen sealed Tonga’s first win of the OFC Women’s Nations Cup 2025.
With both teams chasing a positive end to their campaigns, it was Tonga who struck at the death with Hausia-Haugen, who had been a constant threat for the Mataliki, sealing the victory for her team.
It had been a tightly contested match with moments of quality from both sides. Tonga started with early intensity, winning a corner in the opening minutes and pressing high through Hausia-Haugen, captain Losatika Feke and Vika Mafi on the right flank. But the Cook Islands, anchored by goalkeeper Kimberly Uini, stood strong under pressure.

Cook Islands captain Tayla Hetherington, alongside Deja Pareta, Teretia Teinaki and Ally Toailoa, controlled large patches of the midfield, looking to create through the centre. Hetherington had one of her side’s best chances with a powerful drive that forced a sharp save from the Tongan keeper.
Substitutions added fresh legs and momentum in the second half. Tonga brought on Ana Pongi and 19-year-old Anela Makaafi to push for a goal, while the Cook Islands introduced Ngamata Moekaa, who made an instant impact with her pressing and drive in the final third.
The match looked destined for a draw as both teams continued to trade possession and half chances, but Hausia-Haugen had other plans. With time nearly up, she latched onto a loose ball on the edge of the area and powered home her side’s first goal of the campaign.
Tonga walks away with their first win and clean sheet, while the Cook Islands are left to reflect on a performance full of heart but undone in the final moments.
