Oceania champions New Zealand have been outclassed 4-1 by Austria in their final Group L match at the FIFA U-17 World Cup in Qatar.
Needing to win to have any chance of qualifying for the round of 16, Martin Bullock’s side weathered a first storm, before conceding at the start of the second half and then out of nowhere managing a late equaliser through William Britton. But the Austrians who dominated the encounter from the start, scored two late goals to secure the three points and finish top of the Group.
The Austrians dominance was evident by having 25 shots to New Zealand’s six, including nine on target.

The breakthrough goal came four minutes into the second spell when Nicolas Jozepovic neatly controlled the ball inside the box with defenders around him before turning and firing a blistering right footed effort into the top corner of the net.
It was no less than Austria deserved, leaving Toby Borgnis in the New Zealand goal, with no chance. Borgnis had a strong game, making a number of saves to keep the young Kiwis in the game.
In the 82nd minute a mistake by an Austrian defender gifted the ball to Aaron Cartwright who flicked the ball to Britton to fire home a shock equalisier.
But New Zealand was not on level terms for long however, as Jakob Werner headed home Austria’s second goal in the 87th minute and Hasan Deshishau made sure of the result with a quick late double coming on as a substitute.
