As the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup 2025™ kicks off this weekend, New Zealand coach Alana Gunn reports a squad that’s fit, focused, and buzzing with energy.
After an intense week-long training camp, the Junior Football Ferns are putting the final touches on their preparation ahead of Monday’s (NZT) tournament opener against Japan.
“The girls are in a good space,” said a delighted Gunn. “We’re fit, we’ve got no injuries, which is really great.”
The coach described the camp atmosphere as “wholesome,” with players fully embracing the chance to represent Aotearoa on the world stage. For Gunn and her staff, the World Cup is about more than just result, it’s about shaping the future of women’s football in New Zealand.
“We take both a short-term and long-term approach. Every match is a learning opportunity and a chance to adapt, grow, and apply what we’ve learned into the next challenge,” she explained.

The Ferns’ preparations have included a thrilling 4–3 victory over Nigeria in a friendly, a match Gunn called “a great opportunity to test ourselves.” The game also saw five players make their international debuts, a milestone moment for the rising stars.
Now officially entering the FIFA tournament bubble, the atmosphere has shifted gears.
“Once you’re in the bubble, you can feel it,” said Gunn. “Everything gets a bit more serious, but the excitement goes up too.”
Support from home continues to fuel the team’s spirit. Parents have made the journey to cheer them on in person, while messages from fans back in New Zealand pour in daily.
There’s also a strong sense of regional pride, with the Kiwis sharing camaraderie with fellow Oceania representatives Samoa.
As the countdown to kickoff ticks closer, Gunn’s final message is simple but heartfelt:
“Thank you for the support. We feel it, and we can’t wait to make you proud.”
