Hekari Womens FC are up for the challenge in their third consecutive campaign at the OFC Women’s Champions League in Tahiti in May.

Having finished runner-up in the Solomon Islands last year, following a narrow 1-0 defeat to Auckland United, the Papua New Guinea side are determined to go one better in 2025.

The team line up in Group B alongside defending champions Auckland United (New Zealand), Pansa (American Samoa), and host side AS Pirae.

Head Coach Ericson Komeng says the team are ready to compete.

“Facing the defending champions Auckland United in our pool, along with Pansa of American Samoa, presents a strong test.

“We are eager to confront these matches and demonstrate our growth and enhanced capabilities.”

Despite falling ever-so short in the past two years, Hekari are committed to showing their resilience in this years tournament.

“I think we’ve learnt a lot from the past two Champions Leagues, where we finished as runners-up on both occasions,” says Komeng.

“This experience has fortified our resolve and strategic understanding, and we simply have to maintain our competitive edge and stay focused throughout the tournament”.

A significant boost for the team is the return of their two Fijian international players, Maria Veronica and Adi Litia Bakaniceva.

Their contribution was instrumental in the team’s recent WSCL final victory against Lae City Dwellers.

“They integrate seamlessly with our playing style, and their return has significantly enhanced our preparation,” says Komeng.

The team also welcomes back former Papua New Guinea goalkeeper Roxen Komeng, whose experience at the highest level adds another layer of strength and stability to the squad.

“Roxen’s return is a major plus. Her extensive experience and proven ability at the highest level will undoubtedly benefit the team and the club.”
