Chelsea have beaten Benfica 4-1 after extra time of a dramatic round of 16 match in Charlotte.
Reece James scored what looked to be a decisive goal in the 64th minute, before the match was suspended in the 86th minute due to a looming storm. When play resumed more than two hours later, Benfica won an injury time penalty which Angel Di Maria calmly converted to send the match into extra time.
The Portuguese side was then reduced to 10 men with a red card to Prestianni at the start of extra time and it turned the match in Chelsea’s favour, with goals from Nkunku, Neto and Drewsbury-Hall sealing the victory, nearly five hours after the match had kicked off.

Earlier Palmeiras booked their place in the quarter-finals with a dramatic 1-0 extra-time victory over Brazilian rivals Botafogo in Philadelphia.
Substitute Paulinho was the hero, firing home the winner 10 minutes into extra time with a low strike beyond Botafogo goalkeeper John. However, the win came at a cost, with Palmeiras finishing the match with 10 men following a red card to captain Gustavo Gomez.
