Alosi Bloomfield will make history for Tongan futsal players, when she appears at the inaugural FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup 2025™ in the Philippines with the Futsal Ferns.

Bloomfield hails from Ha’akio and Lakepa in Tonga, and becomes the first Tongan woman to play at the FIFA Futsal Women’s World Cup, a milestone that carries deep meaning for her and her community.

“This is the epitome of playing futsal for someone from a small country like New Zealand and also being a Pacific Island player. It’s unreal, I feel so blessed.”

Bloomfield, whose roots are in football, began playing Futsal in her late teens for local clubs in Auckland where she grew her confidence and learned the detail of the sport. Her progress took her into regional programmes and then into the national frame, representing New Zealand at the OFC Futsal Women’s Nations Cup 2024.

In that tournament, Bloomfield debuted against her home country, Tonga, which was a milestone moment for the Tongan-Kiwi.

“On my debut, I scored my first ever goal against my home country. So I think that was pretty special and probably one of my favourite moments to date was being able debut against Tonga.”

Since then, Bloomfield has also received another call-up for the Futsal Ferns’ tour to Brazil, where she was able to compete against the worlds best. After spending time refining her skills in the hopes of making the World Cup squad, Bloomfield received an unforgettable call that would send her on the plane to the Philippines.

“When I got the call, I cried straight away. I could not speak for a few seconds. I thought about my parents and my grandparents. I thought about everyone in Tonga who has lifted me. It was a strong moment.”

Bloomfield praises her community of support, who has backed her journey to this point.

“I feel so blessed. There’s a big community behind me. My family, my church, my workmates, my extended family. They’ve all been supportive. Coming from a Pacific Island Tongan background, they back you 100 percent. Every achievement is the result of a lot of people.

“Being the first Tongan in a World Cup squad is something I’ll carry for life. It’s not a small thing. It’s a responsibility and an honour. We might be small in numbers, but we’re always strong. I’m here carrying the smaller countries with me.”

The Futsal Ferns face Japan in their tournament opener on Sunday 23rd November 2025 NZT, and have also been drawn alongside Portugal and Tanzania in a tough pool.
