The winner of Group B will earn themselves a so-called easier semi-final showdown with the runner-up in Group A, at this stage, New Caledonia.
The other match in the section sees the already eliminated pair of Solomon Islands and American Samoa playing for pride in the earlier kick-off at 1pm local time.
Group leaders Tahiti are in a strong position to finish top of the pile in this section and only need a draw to set up a likely last four showdown with arch-rivals New Caledonia. The Tahitians have scored 27 goals in this tournament, with 10 notched by striker Michel Maihi. Defensively Tahiti look formidable as the only team in the competition to not concede a goal. Their game with the Solomon Islands was a tough test for the Tahitian defence but Vaianui Drollet and Joachim Tenuanua were solid as the French Polynesians excelled. Expect big things from talented midfielders Heirauarii Salem and Rayan Petitgas who both add considerable value in midfield.
Only four goals separate Vanuatu from their opponents and they will be desperate to usurp the Tahitians in what shapes as a must-win scenario for them. A draw or defeat could leave Vanuatu contemplating a semi-final clash with five times champions New Zealand who currently sit atop Group A. But Vanuatu have shown their ability to score vital goals with their striker Sylvain Worworbu leading the way while their defence – led by Joseph Iaruel – has withstood everything thrown at them so far. The last time the two teams met in 2003, Vanuatu prevailed in a 3-2 win over Tahiti.
American Samoa have had a difficult campaign with three consecutive losses although their previous outing – a 2-0 defeat to Tonga – showed significant improvement. Coach Uinifareti Aliva will rely on defender Sione Moeaki, midfielders Tokilupelekina Afu and Tevita Moala and the technical skills of Tor-Lawrence Mana’o to disrupt their more technically gifted opponents in what is a very tough finish to the competition for the co-hosts.
Solomon Islands hopes of reaching the knock-out stage were ended thanks to defeats by Tahiti and Vanuatu but despite that disappointment their youngsters have lived up to their nation’s reputation for great individual skills. The attacking trio of Larry Zama, John Oge and Benjimin Toata are likely to fully exploit any wide open spaces their opponents give up with coach Jacob Moli aiming for all-out attack to finish the competition in winning style.
