Kananafou Theological Seminary field has hosted the event throughout the month with parents, teachers and players packing the venue and proving football is indeed a sport on the rise in American Samoa.
“It has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm from everyone who has been involved,” Director of Catholic Education in American Samoa Edward Brown says.
“The tournament is an excellent venue to bring our community together and support the children as we strive to work on healthier lifestyles.
FFAS CEO Tavita Tamua says it is promising to see the growth, with two new schools joining the competition this year.
“It seems as if this league is improving every year even though it’s only been three years now,” Taumua said.
“It has become one of our most well attended competitions because almost all the parents are at the field cheering on their children, nieces and nephews.”
FIFA Development Officer Eva Pasquier was in American Samoa on a whirlwind two-day trip which included taking in the competition and Taumua says she was pleased to see so many children taking part, and especially young girls.
“She was extremely happy to see the young girls playing. It is one of FIFA’s directives to develop the women’s game and this is at its most basic level,” he says.
“So good luck to all the teams that will be playing in the play-offs and for those that didn’t make it, don’t worry, as long as you had fun that’s all that matters.”
The final round of the competition will be held on 25 Novmber before the top four teams form the boy’s and girl’s divisions of the two age groups compete in the play-offs.
The play-offs are set for 26 November with the finals to be held the following day, 27 November.
