The youngest team competing in the OFC U-20 Women’s Championship will open their campaign against New Zealand, easily the most experienced side in the competition.
And while they know they’re up against it, coach Tom McDonald is only looking at the positive outcomes of the encounter.
“It’s a daunting game and we’re being realistic given New Zealand’s track record in these competitions.
But we will be positive and if we get the chance to attack, we’ll take it,” McDonald says.
McDonald says his side is extremely excited about taking part in the competition and getting a taste of life as an international footballer.
“For many players this is the first time out of the country so this trip is not just about football for them, but about experience of another culture,” he says.
And McDonald is hopeful the experience they gain will strengthen women’s football in Vanuatu for the better.
“Most of these girls will be able to compete in the U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers again in two years’ time, and some in four years’ time,” he says.
“We see this as an opportunity to give these girls international experience early, so that in two years or four years’ time, Vanuatu is not a team to be taken lightly.
“Some of the girls here have great skill but the different environment, culture and food will be a shock to most of these girls first time around.”
While it will be an all-new experience for the young players, McDonald says they’re looking forward to immersing themselves in their surroundings and making the most of the opportunity to travel to New Zealand.
“It’s going to be a great experience for the girls to travel to Auckland, it’s a beautiful city with lovely people.
“For many of the players it’s going to be a culture shock, but that’s the fun part – finding out the differences between New Zealand culture and Vanuatu culture.
“It being summer also means the girls won’t be too cold. There won’t be a lot of time to see the sights and sounds, but the girls keep pestering me about McDonalds.”
Vanuatu get their OFC U-20 Women’s Championship campaign underway tomorrow afternoon against New Zealand. The match kicks off at 4pm at Mangere Centre Park in Auckland.
