With the FIFA Women’s World Cup Canada 2015™ just around the corner, the XV Pacific Games and the OFC U-17 and U-20 Championships also in the calendar for 2015 and early 2016, it’s a full-on year for women’s football.
With almost 1300 registered female players and 18 senior teams, the women’s game is covering ground in New Caledonia.
While the numbers show there’s plenty happening, the need to develop football among six-12 year olds remains high with over 50 per cent of all licenced players aged under 16 years old.
Last season the support of FIFA, OFC and FFF helped the Federation put on activities to promote women’s football including the Challenge Phylo in the north, football festivals in Noumea and Dumbea and the welcoming of female footballers to the Football Schools set up around the nation.
This year the focus is on improving the level of those girls playing football, as well as increasing the number of U-8 and U-12 players to 20 per cent more than in 2014.
The opening festivals are being held on two dates in May – Wednesday 20 May is with the Caisse des Ecoles de Dumbea in Auteuil, while on Friday 22 May a “Festi-Foot” is being held at stade de Hnasse for girls aged between 13 and 16 years old.
However, the events will be held throughout the year with festivals scheduled for every month throughout 2015 in the Loyalty Islands and Noumea, on top of the leagues and other football activities which have already been scheduled for the season.
