At the media conference in Port Moresby yesterday, WNB Governor Sasindran Muthuvel said his government was happy to meet its commitment to the K2.4 million Academy.
“I am pleased to present this cheque as our counterpart funding to this new Academy,” Muthuvel says.
“It is particularly pleasing to note that FIFA gave its approval for the construction of this Academy not only to promote soccer but to have other codes using this facility as well.”
He said the facility would also be used when the province hosts the PNG Games in 2016.
PNGFA and OFC President David Chung was grateful for the WNB provincial government for honouring its commitment.
“FIFA is happy to support infrastructure development in the New Guinea Island region and this facility will be developed for them to host the PNG Games in 2016,” Chung said.
“Other sports apart from soccer will benefit from the use of these facilities.”
Chung said formal approval for the soccer academy in Bougainville is expected to be granted by FIFA at its meeting on March 22.
“There will be a ground breaking ceremony in April or May for the academy in Bougainville. The AROB government has committed counterpart funding of US$600.00 (K1.3 million) and FIFA will hopefully be meeting the other half to construct this new facility,” Chung said.
