The Fijians posted a fourth-place finish last time around and Mateinaqara believes he and his team mates are well-placed for a better showing in 2011.
“Beach soccer was new to me when I first participated in the 2009 play-offs,” he says.
“This time, I believe we have had ample time to learn more of the basics of the code. Given the experience I gained during the last tournament, I think I’m now in a good position to do much better.”
The 23-year-old is from Taveuni but plies his trade with Navua these days and believes he will be able to make a smooth transition back into the beach version of the world’s most popular game.
“I do not see that there will be any problems adapting to beach soccer as it is something I enjoy playing and I hope to keep improving in time to come,” he says.
The other survivors from Fiji’s previous campaign are Sandeep Nair and Shalen Buisena.
The OFC Beach Soccer Championship will be held at the Jardin de Paofai venue in Papeete from February 22 to 26.
Fiji will be joined by hosts Tahiti, defending champions Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, who will all be battling it out for a place at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, set to be held in Italy during September.
