FFAS President, Fai’ivae Iuli Alex Godinet, presented a US$5000 cheque to Governor Lolo Moliga earlier this month during a luncheon at the federation’s headquarters.
“Governor Lolo, on behalf of Football Federation American Samoa I hereby donate this cheque of $5000 to towards the Youth Community Centre,” Godinet shared.
The Youth Community Centre is being built on the former Korea House site and is a project being overseen by the Department of Youth and Affairs. The centre director is former defensive lineman for NFL side Cincinnati Bengals Jonathon Fanene, and deputy director is Pa’u Roy Ausage, both of whom were on hand during the luncheon.
“I thank the soccer association and graciously accept this kind gift,” Governor Lolo said.
“As I have said before, this gym is being built for our youth, and if the soccer association has a use for it then go ahead and use it with the Government’s blessing.”
The project is a collaboration between the American Samoa and Indonesian Governments after the latter pledged $300,000 to help fund the construction, with American Samoa’s Government matching that amount.
Construction is expected to be completed this year, and Godinet says once it is up and running, the Federation will certainly be lining up to make use of the facilities.
“We do have use for this gymnasium and that’s for a different kind of soccer called futsal, or indoor soccer,” he said.
“In the past we have used Samoana High School’s gymnasium or the one at ASCC. But with the close proximity of this gym to our facilities, it will work out great for us to have our futsal competitions there provided we have properly booked it for our use.”
The luncheon marked Governor Lolo’s first official visit and tour of the FFAS headquarters and facilities.
