The Preliminary is the opportunity for the champion clubs to take a step up to the next level with direct entry to the OFC Champions League proper up for grabs for the champion.
For three of the respective domestic champions, Lupe Ole Soaga from the host nation, Puaikura FC of Cook Islands and American Samoa’s Samoan Korean Baptist Church FC, this year’s event marks their entry into the annals of Oceania’s premier club football competition.
No team from American Samoa, Cook Islands or Tonga has reached the final stages of this competition in over 12 years so the prize for the winner of the Preliminary here in Apia is extra special.
And, after Kiwi FC stamped their mark in Pago Pago in such formidable fashion, the pressure will be on Lupe Ole Soaga to repeat that feat with some history-making performances of their own.
Tonga’s champions Lotoha’apai United have the most storied history of the four teams taking part in this competition.
They will be looking to live up to their favourite’s moniker, with experience on their side.
The stage is set for some exciting football action at J.S. Blatter Football Complex so if you are out to see some regional rising stars or former Champions League victors in action or if you are just keen to get behind the local side,
come on down.
The competition is being held from 7-11 October with two games a day being played on 7, 9 and 11 October.
The first two match days kick-off at 4.30pm with the final match day getting underway at 3.30pm.
