The New Zealand-based mentor spent eight days working with the ‘Solympics’ squad and local coaches as preparations continued for the qualifying tournament, which is set to take place in Taupo, New Zealand, from March 16 to 24.
He spent a lot of time with the Solomon Islands Football Federation (SIFF) technical department staff during his stay and was on hand to offer advice and assist in the Solympics training sessions.
“Basically, I am here to provide any assistance that is required by the local coaching team and those supporting them,” Fernandes said. “I hope I can supplement and enhance what they are already giving to the team.”
The presence of the 35-year-old is likely to pay off for the Solympics players as he is highly-qualified and is currently the head coach of the Asia Pacific Football Academy (APFA), a football school in New Zealand’s South Island which focuses on the individual development of young players from various countries.
Before joining APFA, Fernandes spent six years in the United States working at the youth club, Olympic development, university, professional and national team levels.
He currently holds a United States Soccer Federation National A Licence – the highest accreditation sanctioned by the organisation – and National Goalkeeping Licence.
SIFF general secretary Eddie Ngava is pleased to have hosted a coach of Fernandes’ standing and is sure the Solympics players will have benefited from his expertise.
“We feel privileged to have had someone of his calibre with us,” Ngava said. “I am sure a little of that Brazilian magic will be passed on to the players. This is very welcome support and I wish to thank Giovani for making time in his busy schedule to travel to the Solomon Islands.”
Fernandes’ trip to the Solomons was made possible by OFC through the member association technical assistance programme, which aims to support the national teams of its members by providing expertise through coaching and mentoring.
