The group of 41 has been selected based on performances in the National Soccer League and Besta United are the most strongly represented club with 16 players.
Hekari United, the country’s 2012 O-League representatives, contribute six players while Gigira Laitepo Central and Eastern Stars have five each. Young talent from Petro Souths, Bulolo and Tukoko Unitech make up the rest of the training squad.
The men’s Olympic qualifying tournament for Oceania is set to take place in Fiji during March and will see Papua New Guinea come up against the eight other OFC member associations who are International Olympic Committee (IOC) members – American Samoa, Cook Islands, Fiji, New Zealand, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga and Vanuatu.
Farina’s squad is training this month at the Papua New Guinea Football Association Academy in Lae as the former Australia national team coach looks to make a decision on the line-up he will take to Fiji early next year.
All players competing in the qualifying tournament must fall into the U-23 age category but the winning country will be able to add three over-age players to the squad for the Olympics.
