The team put in a disappointing showing during its last outing at the 2010 OFC Women’s Nations Cup, being bundled out in the pool stages after failing to win a match.
But Logaivau, who took on the job from previous coach Ramesh Sharma earlier this year, says the slate has now been wiped clean and is confident of a good showing in New Caledonia.
“We are not going there just to participate,” he says.
“We want to compete and try to better our performance from the last Pacific Games in 2007, when the team claimed a bronze medal.”
Logaivau is pleased with the make-up of the squad and believes there is enough talent in the ranks for Fiji to be amongst the front-runners during the tournament.
“We have a very balanced squad this time with few players from the Women’s Nations Cup and last Pacific Games, and a lot of young talent. Like all other Fiji sides, we are aiming to win gold.”
Of the up-and-coming crop, the likes of Bela Ratubalavu, Laijipa Daini, Viniana Riwai and Australia-based Vanisha Karishma Kumar are regarded as ones to look out for but there will be plenty of other talent on show in the 20-strong Games squad.
Logaivau currently has 25 players at his disposal and led his charges through a three-day camp in Suva last week.
“The camp was a success as it helped us work on a lot of different areas,” he says.
The extended squad will be brought together again on July 24 and will remain in camp until the final line-up is announced on August 16.
