Chung was elected OFC President at the OFC Congress in Pago Pago, American Samoa on January 15 and became the first PNGFA official to take on the role.
He has spent the time since his appointment overseas and his arrival in Port Moresby marked the first time he has touched down on Papua New Guinea soil as the head of football in the Pacific region.
He was greeted with a welcome ceremony and says he is delighted to finally be home.
“I am happy to be back,” he says “It’s a real honour to be elected OFC President and I must say I feel privileged and proud to represent Papua New Guinea and take up this position.”
President Chung says his main focus is to bring solidarity and equality to all Pacific Island nations and to prove to the rest of the world that Pacific teams and players can compete on the world’s biggest stages.
“We are on track with our OFC goals and now our main target is to improve the technical aspects of our game,” he says.
The strengthening of national competitions within Oceania, such as Papua New Guinea’s National Soccer League, is one of six key areas that have been indentified, along with improving technical and educational programmes.
President Chung says there is much work to be done but that, if improvements are made in these key areas, the Pacific region will earn a high degree of respect within the footballing world.
He is just as optimistic about the development of the planet’s most popular sport in Papua New Guinea.
“The PNGFA is on target, we are improving,” he says.
“I think we are almost half way towards achieving our goals. A big focus is to have a competitive team for the Pacific Games this year. The goal there is to win a medal.”
