The 17-year-old has plenty of experience in Oceania tournaments after helping Vanuatu to a fourth placing in the 2011 OFC U-17 Championship and now with the U-20 side in Lautoka, Fiji – but the upcoming season will mark his first showing in the region’s premier club tournament.
“I have never participated in the Champions League but I think it will be a good chance to play against some of the best players in the region,” Obed says.
While he won’t be joining his Amicale team mates on day one of the competition due to his national U-20 duties, Obed is hopeful he will be able to make an impact at some point.
Amicale have some history of success in the Champions League, previously known as the O-League, after finishing runners-up to Auckland City in 2011. Obed is keen to add his contribution and help earn the country its first title in the prestigious tournament.
His two favourites sides to watch in action are Spain and Real Madrid, with fellow defender Sergio Ramos his favourite player, and he hopes the skills and Spanish style he has grown up watching can be translated onto the field against Amicale’s Group A opponents Ba, Solomon Warriors and Hekari United.
The OFC Champions League kicks off on Saturday with Amicale facing the Solomon Warriors away at Lawson Tama Stadium in Honiara.
