In the Junior Varisty division, Faga’itua has moved into the No. 1 spot and need to win next Saturday to clinch the championship. They are a point (11-10) ahead of Samoana,champion of the last three years.
In the only other match of the first round of the playoffs, No. 2 Fa’asao-Marist Cougars dispatched No. 7 Tafuna Warriors 5-1. The third game, No. 3 Nu’uuli Voc-Tech Wildcats against No. 6 Leone Lions, was postponed to a later date.
STALLIONS 4, VIKINGS 2
With a 1-0 lead, Faga’itua had a player sent off for denying a goal scoring opportunity and the subsequent PK gave Kanana Fou a 2-0 lead for the first half.
Faga’itua came out strong in the second half with a goal in the early minutes, making it 2-1 but the Stallions answered back right away with Maketa Agatonu’s second goal.
Sina Luani scored her second goal for the Vikings 10 minutes later but Agatonu again came through for Kanana Fou with her third goal of the match to put the game out of
reach.
COUGARS 5, WARRIORS 1
Alyssa Willis scored four goals in the No. 2 seed’s 5-1 win over Tafuna. Jennifer Sasala scored the other two goals for the Cougars.
At the end of the first half Fa’asao-Marist was up 3-1 and a goal each from Willis and Sasala in the second period sealed the game for the Cougars.
JUNIOR VARSITY
Samoana’s fourth title in a row is now in jeopardy after losing to the Vikings 2-1 last Saturday.
In the other match Tafuna earned their first win of the season with a 2-0 showing against Leone.
The season ends on Feb. 22 with the Vikings taking on the Warriors and the Lions going up against the Sharks.
