The transformation of Port Moresby’s sporting and municipal facilities is breathtaking when you consider the many challenges the country faces.
As ever, football is at the forefront of the Pacific Games with the facility at the Bisini Sports Complex a shining example of what can be achieved when ambition and financial support match each other.
Our future aim is to host the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup in November next year and if there were any doubts Papua New Guinea is capable of taking such a big step into the events world, they must surely be dispelled now.
It gives me great pleasure to see men’s and women’s teams from the OFC member nations and our friends from non-affiliated associations come together in the spirit of sport, solid, unified and motivated to showcase the very best of their talent.
The football is certain to capture the imagination of local fans for whom the Pacific Games opens a window to dreams and aspirations they may otherwise not be privileged to sample in person.
I hope that this multisport competition will be the first of many more such opportunities for Papua New Guinea to host world sports events. I am certain it is a challenge this country of seven million people, thousands of languages and diverse cultures can rise to.
I take the opportunity to once again welcome and congratulate the athletes, administrators, ONOC, local organising committee, the governments at both state and municipal level, sponsors, community groups, our operational staff and volunteers for their hard work, passion and commitment in making the XV Pacific Games a big success.
Yours in football,
David Chung
