The glovemen entertained the crowd on Thursday night at Churchill Park in Lautoka with some spectacular saves as only two goals were scored during the four games.
Defending champions Navua managed to get one, a second-half strike from Maciu Dunadamu, to post a 1-0 win over Tavua in the opening match of the evening. The victory was the side’s second triumph in a row after they defeated Nasinu by the same scoreline on Sunday.
Tavua goalie Josaia Ratu stole the limelight with his impressive form while Benaminio Mateinaqara also had a sound game between the sticks at the other end.
Fellow goalkeeper Akuila Mataisuva was undoubtedly the man of the match for Labasa as they fought out a scoreless draw against Nadi. He produced a string of daring stops but it was his oppposite, Vereti Dickson, who made the save of the day, keeping out a powerful 35-yard strike from Pita Bolaitoga with his finger tips.
There was also no score in the clash between Ba and Rewa, who had national custodian Simione Tamanisau to thank for earning a share of the spoils. He covered up for the mistakes of his defence and played more as a sweeper than a goalkeeper. Jone Ralulu also made some good saves for Ba.
Waitakere United star Danny Robinson made his debut in goal for hosts Lautoka and had to work overtime to keep a clean sheet against Suva. The Englishman had some communication problems with his defence but still managed to play a vital role in the 1-0 win.
Suva’s Mesake Navitikula also showed some good handling but blotted his copybook with the Lautoka goal. He assumed Lautoka defender Samuela Kautoga was offside and was ball watching when Kautoga headed it home.
Although Robinson enjoyed a very impressive debut, several of the other imported and overseas-based players failed to shine.
Stefan Clemens and Pedro Osorio both had quiet games for Navua, while Roy Krishna and Pita Bolaitoga were also not at their best for Labasa.
The fourth day of action takes place today with the fate of some teams set to be decided. Rewa have a double header against Tavua and Nasinu, while Nadroga also have two matches, against Labasa and Lautoka. Suva have just one game against Nadi, as do Ba and Navua, who clash in the match of the day at 5.30pm.
The finals are scheduled to take place on Sunday.
