After their impressive 13-0 win over the co-hosts on Tuesday Vanuatu face another team fresh from a heavy defeat Tonga. Led by exciting striker Sylvain Worworbu, who bagged four goals in their 13-goal romp against American Samoa, Vanuatu will want to maintain their high scoring winning momentum and stay at the top of Group B.
Their opponents Tonga were trashed 10-1 by Solomon Islands despite opening the scoring in that match and must put memories of their defensive horror show firmly behind them if they’re to focus on improvement. Timote Moleni’s players started the Solomon Islands game strongly enough by scoring the opening goal of the match but faded badly in the second half to concede seven goals and cannot afford a similar capitulation if they are to avoid a repeat showing – or worse – of their 11-0 defeat to Vanuatu in 2003.
In Group B’s other match, co-hosts American Samoa take on another potential semi-finalist Tahiti. Out of their depth against Vanuatu, American Samoa will need to draw on the support of their home crowd and perhaps hope their opponents suffer on off day if they are to resist the Tahitians attacking flair.
Tahiti will be in no mood to start slowly after witnessing the high scoring victories shown by Vanuatu and Solomon Islands in their first games in a section where the semi-final picture could be decided upon how many goals each of the top three ranked sides can score against the competition lightweights.
