“I’m really enjoying the tournament so far but what I’m really looking forward to is the match against Auckland City,” he says.
“They’re semi-professional so I will try to do my best against them to level up with them.
“I played against them in the 2010 final I think – they smashed us. But at that time I was young. Now I’m getting there, I’m more mature, my skills are more developed and I know what I want to do when I get out there.”
Amicale are two-from-two in the competition so far, and despite his best efforts Wetney is yet to add his name to the score sheet.
“I’ve hit the post a few times during the tournament,” the striker says.
“It’s hard to describe what it’s like when you miss opportunities like that. I’m always trying my best to score but it just didn’t happen.”
Wetney says in terms of finding the back of the net there’s a lot of pressure – but mostly from himself.
“The team has high expectations of me because I’m one of the playmakers. But I don’t want to let the team down and I have to score so there’s also a lot of pressure that I’m putting on myself,” he says.
“If I don’t score, the crowd will get up and dance and be like, ‘come on man, what are you doing here’, so I have to do my absolute best.”
Having spent a few seasons in Vanuatu now, Wetney says it’s great to be doing what he loves as full-time as is possible in the Pacific.
“I love futsal but you can’t make a living playing indoor in the Solomon Islands – it’s just for fun,” he says.
“If I stay in the Solomons I have to work, whereas in Vanuatu it’s all football, all the time.”
He says he enjoys the pace of the Champions League, which in comparison to Vanuatu’s national league is much slower.
“In Vanuatu it’s fast and you don’t have much time to control the ball before someone is down on you. Two seconds and they hit.
“In this competition, you’ve got time to hold the ball and time to move with it. I much prefer the slightly slower version of the game.”
Amicale will face off against Auckland City FC at 4pm in the final Group B match of the OFC Champions League. The winner will top the group and move directly into the semi-finals.
