FFAS president Alex Godinet was present to officially open the league.
“This is one of our most popular competitions, the Summer Youth League, for the youth of our territory,” Godinet said. “Go and enjoy the games and enjoy yourselves.”
New executive committee members Amio Mavega-Luvu and Michelle Sasala were given the honours of kick-starting the competition.
There are 43 teams from all 14 FFAS clubs taking part in the Summer Youth League overall. There are the six-eight and nine-11 mixed with both being non-competitive divisions. The two divisions have eight and ten teams respectively.
Missing from last year’s Summer Youth League was a girl’s 15-17 contest, but this year seven clubs are fielding a team in the U-17 fixture.
A change has been made in the competitive divisions with the U-17 Girls and 15-17 Boys moving away from the five-a-side format to a seven-a-side design. The 12-14 Boys division will remain at five-a-side.
The defending champions in the 12-14 age group are Ilaoa and To’omata, but this year they are not fielding a team at this level. Nine other club’s will instead be vying for the honour.
Utulei Youth are the defending champions of the 15-17 Boys and have held the title for the past two years running. They are back to defend their title against the eight other teams competing in this age bracket.
