The pair were not named in coach Intiaz Khan’s original 18-strong line-up but received a late call up after nine players were omitted for breaches of discipline.
Buisena was part of the previous national beach soccer side, who came fourth at the OFC championship in 2009, and joined Toma in linking up with the squad last week.
Khan is disappointed by the lack of comittment shown by those he has axed but is pleased to be welcoming the new pair into the fold.
“I would like to thank Veresa Toma and Shalen Buisena, who showed good comittment to answer the call up for national duties on such short notice,” he says.
“We now have 11 players in the camp and we may include a few others as we get closer to the playoffs.”
The OFC Beach Soccer Championship will be held at the Jardin de Paofai venue in Papeete from February 22 to 26.
Fiji will be joined by hosts Tahiti, defending champions Solomon Islands and Vanuatu, who will all be battling it out for a place at the FIFA Beach Soccer World Cup, set to be held in Italy during September.
Khan says his charges will face an uphill battle at the Oceania qualifiers.
“It will be a really tough task for us but we will give it our best shot. We are not able to take some of the best with us but I have full faith in the players I currently have,” he says.
“I’m confident that they will rise to the occasion and prove themselves.”
The squad shifts the location of their camp to Sigatoka next week before departing for Tahiti.
“We do not have much time on our hands,” Khan says. “We plan to have some sessions at the sand dunes before finalising the team that will travel to Tahiti.”
Khan is calling for the nation to rally behind his side as they look to challenge the Solomon Islands’ Pacific domination of the beach version of the world’s most popular game.
“I would just like the general public to support us as we are representing the country,” he says.
The current players in camp are: Benaminio Mateinaqara (Navua), Rajnesh Raju (Navua), Archie Watkins (Rewa), Epeli Saukuru (Rewa), Ratu Veresa Toma (Rewa), Sandeep Nair (Labasa), Luke Rawadamu (Nadroga), Sanaila Cagaica (Nadroga), Shalen Buisena (Suva), Maciu Dunadamu (Labasa), Ratu Josefata Dugucagi (Nadi).
