New Zealand youth international James McGarry will join the Eredivisie after penning a deal with Willem II for two seasons.

The 20-year-old joins Willem II from New Zealand-based A-League side the Wellington Phoenix, where he has been playing since 2014, having come through the club’s academy programme.

“The atmosphere at the club feels good, there is a good culture and everyone can get along well,” McGarry said of his new club.

“The conversations with the trainers were positive and their understanding of the game suits me. I feel like starting the competition.”

Willem II technical director Joris Mathijsen was positive about the club’s new signing.

“We are very pleased with the arrival of James. He is a talented boy with a good mentality,” Mathijsen said.

“This is the quality of players from Australia and New Zealand and we are glad he chose to develop further in Europe.”

McGarry has featured for New Zealand at both U-17 and U-20 levels.
