The opening match of the OFC Futsal Men’s Cup 2025 delivered a thrilling contest, with the Solomon Islands narrowly defeating New Zealand 2-1 in a closely fought encounter.

New Zealand started with patient build-up play, testing the Solomon Islands’ defence with early shots from Dylan Manickum and Jordan Ditford. Though, their opponents defence held firm with goalkeeper Cliff Sasau keeping several attempts at bay.

Despite sustained pressure from New Zealand, the Solomon Islands struck first, with Calvin Do’oro leading a swift counter-attack before setting up Samuel Tovoa to give the Kurukuru the lead.

New Zealand responded with relentless attacks, creating several chances before Logan Wisnewski struck to equalize following their timeout.

Solomon Islands started the second half confidently, retaining possession and testing the New Zealand defence at every turn. The Kiwis continued to press, but Sasau was on hand to repeatedly deny their efforts.

Their persistence paid off when Owen Bunabo slid the ball into the bottom left corner to make it 2-1, sparking an eruption from the fans. The Solomon Islands came close to adding a third, only for a goal to be ruled out.

The home crowd rallied behind the Kurukuru as they kept New Zealand under constant pressure, ultimately securing a hard-fought and memorable victory.

The Solomon Islands face hosts Fiji in their second match, while New Zealand will look to bounce back against Tuvalu, who return to the Futsal scene after a 14-year absence.
